Gay Sex in the 60’s
The early 60s were a period of transition, sandwiched between the McCarthyism of the 1950s and the gay liberation movement beginning in 1969 (when the Stonewall riots in NY took place) through the 1970s. In the 50s, a few gay men formed the Mattachine Society the first “homophile organization,” basically a social club to meet others.
Middle class gay men were likely to be involved in these clubs, while the working-class men generally picked each other up in bars. Some historians cite the homophile orgs as an early version of assimilationist type activism : “we are non-threatening, just like you.”
A toast to Salvatore.
