Formicariums were first sold in the early 1930s. They became popular in 1956 with the invention of the mail-ordered formicarium: “Uncle Milton’s Ant Farm”; this brand owns the name “ant farm.”Ant farms were made as educational toys for the observation of ants through glass. Around 20 million have been sold since 1956.
